The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is the $789 Stimulus package that President Obama signed which created the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health ACT (HITECH)act of 2009. The HITECH act was $19 billion dollars of the stimulus package designated for hospitals and clinics
who demonstrate “meaningful use” of electronic health records. Meaningful use was defined in the core criteria and is scheduled to be done in stages. Doctors and physicians who do not comply with the HITECH act will face penalties and will not be eligible to receive up $44,000 and up as an incentive for utilizing medicare EHR systems. HITECH gives hospitals and physicians the opportunity to
improve quality health care utilizing health information technology and at the same time receive thousands of dollars in medicare incentives. The goal of the HITECH is to have all hospitals and physicians using EHR systems by the end of 2014.
